As I don't want to fry the battery pack nor the SSTswhat configuration would you recommend as being "safe" please?

The more difficult way will be able to use a potentiometer AND a microcontroller. Some potting in the Al or Cu capsule will maybe reduce temp. The pic doesn't show, but I had to take the pedestal down to 4mm to get the focus right.
